A remarkable step for the climate in Gabon, the UNFCCC has just certified the country’s 187 million carbon credits over the period 2010–2018, with regard to reducing emissions from “deforestation, forest degradation and conservation of forest carbon stocks, sustainable forest management and enhancement of forest carbon stocks”. During the above-mentioned period, Gabon reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 90,636,103 compared to those emitted between 2000 and 2009.

A certification that confirms the effectiveness of the environmental strategies elaborated by President Ali BONGO ONDIMBA and carried out by the Ministry of Environment and Forests. Committed to the fight for the conservation of the environment, the country will now start to benefit from the resources generated by the sustainable management of its forests. Gabon, which emits only 35,000 tons of carbon dioxide, sequesters about 140,000 tons per year. “As for our country, it is a historical moment. Henceforth, we will draw part of our income from the protection of the forest, said the Head of State.
As equivalent to the emission of one ton of CO2 eliminated or avoided, a carbon credit is a unit attributed to the project owner who reduces greenhouse gas emissions, which may then be commercialized.
